Victorious, Pearl returned quietly to her mother and looked up, smiling, into her face." When children grows up in a society where they don't get to develop among other children, they don't learn how to behave to other people, and react properly. Pearl understands that she and her mother is not like the others, She sees that Hester is treated differently. Since Pearl loves her mother, and she is the only one she knows (and she has grown up without any relationship to other kids) she reacts to protect her mother in this situation.
